Maptitude is the best mapping software for business intelligence! Maptitude mapping software allows you to incorporate data from numerous sources into your maps. We mapped the share of the civilian labor force that is self-employed by state and by county.
Each state is labeled with its share of self-employed workers. In general, rural states tend to have a higher share, with Puerto Rico (11.6%), Montana (9.0%), Vermont (8.7%), and Maine (8.3%) all exceeding 8%.
Rates within states tend to have rather high variance as indicated by the color theme on the counties. Of note is that the rural/urban divide is less evident at the county level in some states. While the trend of rural counties having more self-employed workers than the more urban counties holds in some states (Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, and the Dakotas), there is a less stark divide in others (Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, and the Carolinas). Likewise, while urban counties around Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Phoenix tend to have lower levels of self-employed workers, others around Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, and Nashville show much higher levels.
